When I Grow Up… I Want to Be a Sustainable Fish Farmer
Asking kids what they want to be when they grow up is a creative way to get them to think about their hobbies, passions, and future.
Parents, start those conversation early and guide your little ones to think deeper about how they envision themselves later in life by asking questions, such as:
Tell me more about that…
Why do you want to be a…?
What qualities and skills do you think you need to get there?
What kinds of things will you do daily?
Do you want to meet someone who does that job?
Our families on Kvaroy often share with our kids our passion for raising ethical, sustainable seafood. The role of fish farmers will become even more important in the next few years as the human population grows, and with it, the demand to feed everyone with healthy and nutritious foods. That’s why we need more people to become sustainable fish farmers and to nourish the world and protect its waters.
When sourced with the environment in mind, blue foods are some of the most nutritious and eco-friendly foods that have amazing benefits for people, local communities, and nature. They also have some of the lowest carbon footprints!
So what is the job of a sustainable fish farmer? What do they do every day?
Our fish farmers work very closely with nature and the sea. They experience the beauty above and below the water’s surface: the weather, the birds, the wind, the Arctic water, the fresh air, and all the fish swimming in the pristine waters. It’s a great job for those who love being outside in nature. Every day is an adventure at sea!
In the Morning
Every morning, before the fish farmers head out to the water farm, they prepare themselves for their day on the water. Everybody gathers on the docks and puts on their special equipment. If they need to, they load the boats with other materials for the day.
On Their Way to the Farm
In both good and bad weather, they go out to the farm locations every day. In the boat, they have a small kitchenette where they can cook lunch and have some tea or coffee.
At the Farm
They take care of the fish, watching them swim, eat, interact underwater, and grow. From the control center, they make sure the fish are healthy and well by watching through special underwater cameras.
One of the most important tasks is to regularly check the fish for sea lice using special lasers.
All Kvaroy farming locations are equipped with automatic fish feeders that the fish farmers control from distance on land. But sometimes, they go and feed the fish by hand. For some of our team members, that’s their favorite part of the job!
They also do other necessary maintenance, like washing the boats, so that everything is ready for the next day.
Heading Back to the Land
At the end of the work day, they head back to Kvarøy island and unload all of their equipment. On the way home, they leave happy that their job has an important meaning and purpose–to feed people all around the world with delicious food while protecting the health of the environment.
