Seafood Staples for the Whole Family
For healthy and stress-free weeknight meals, we’ve curated a list of sustainable seafood staples that everyone in your family will enjoy. Quick and easy (and hearty!) can go hand-in-hand if you put a little bit of preparation in advance.
Stocking up your home pantry with healthy seafood essentials is a real life-saver. We promise! Taking this vital step in preparing for the beginning of the school year will have your future self smiling.
Canned seafood
Canned fish is convenient, healthy, affordable, and we believe it should be proclaimed the unsung hero of our pantries! Whether it’s tuna, salmon, mussels, or sardines, canned fish has high levels of valuable omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for your family’s overall health and wellbeing.
Kvaroy Arctic’s canned smoked salmon—prepared in partnership with Fishwife—is a delicious staple that you can enjoy as-is, with bread, in a salad, or with a side of roasted veggies. Some of our favorites among their other products are smoked albacore tuna and rainbow trout. Mouth-watering recipes with canned fish are awaiting you here.
We’re also fans of Patagonia’s sustainable collection of various food staples, including canned seafood like salmon, tuna, mussels, mackerel, and anchovies.
Frozen seafood
Protein sources like our sustainably grown salmon are nourishing and health-giving. We harvest it in various ways: frozen fillets, grill bundles, salmon hot-dogs, and salmon burgers! All of them are prepared with the whole family in mind. Delicious, nutritious, and easy to prepare, you can find our diverse salmon recipes here and here.
Our hot dogs and salmon burgers are the solution to preventing food waste while also offering an exciting new way to enjoy salmon at home. Kvaroy uses the trimmings and off-cuts from salmon production to make these outstanding hot dogs. One serving provides your weekly amount of omega-3s! Treat them the same way you would treat traditional burgers and hot dogs—but enjoy them guilt-free because of their heartiness.
If you’d like a delicious scallop meal that you can get on the table quickly, opt for My Fish Dish’s Scallops, which come with a delicious compound butter.
Albacore tuna steaks are another delicious provision that should be a staple in every freezer.
Seafood snacks
Seaweed sheets and snacks are an excellent source of iodine and vitamins B12 and K. Harvested from the oceans, seaweed sheets have long-life and can be paired with grains, salads, fish or utilized for various rolls.
The incredible seaweed snack chips from 12 Tides are the perfect healthy snack to “tide” ourselves over to the next meal. Packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, their kelp chips are both nutrient-dense and delicious. Plus, as they say, “kelp is a climate-change superhero.”
Satisfying, high-protein fish jerky snacks that are gluten-free, free of preservatives and nitrates, and non-GMO, are another great snack. One for Neptune’s perfect bites of wild Alaskan pollock and Pacific rockfish sourced from small-scale US West Coast fisheries are both outstanding.
Other pantry seafood
Kelp purée is nutritious goodness that you can add to soup, salads, sandwiches, and fish meals.
Speaking of kelp, we have to tell you about Barnacle’s kelp seasoning, which has all of the seasonings on an “everything bagel,” along with kelp!
The Ocean’s Balance line of innovative seaweed products are healthy for you and the planet, and also extremely delicious. Their purpose is to make it easy for all of us to include invigorating seaweed in our diets, as an ingredient in cooking, as a sea lettuce topping for avocado toast or to enjoy right out of the bag. Their products are produced from super nutritious green seaweed that grows naturally along rocky, tidal shores. In addition to various seaweed and kelp seasonings, flakes, and dried salads, they also have marinara and arrabiata sauces. Everything is made with sustainably farmed and harvested kelp from the pristine waters of the Gulf of Maine. They are a great source of iodine, fiber, calcium, potassium, and contain no added sugar!
Sustainably harvested seafood is incredibly nutritious for people and should be consumed several times a week. We hope you enjoy our suggestions.
