Salmon Skin Chips Recipe (and Why You Should Eat the Skin!)
The skin of sustainably grown salmon is delicious and nutritious, and can be transformed into healthy, crunchy chips. Maybe they will be your family’s new favorite snack!
Salmon skin is rich in protein, vitamins B and D, minerals like niacin and phosphorus, and, most importantly, it contains the highest amount of omega 3-fatty acids. All these ingredients stimulate the brain, support the heart, and protect the nervous system.
When we know that the salmon we’re eating is harvested in an ethical, clean, traceable, and sustainable way, we should try to use as many parts of the fish as possible. Cooked the right way, salmon skin is a yummy nutrition-bomb with a delightful texture. And there are so many various ways to cook it!
One way to do it is to cook the skin with the salmon and eat it along with the rest of the fish. Crispy salmon skin can bring a delightfully crunchy sensation to a standard filet. Salmon skin adds a contrasting crisp texture which goes well with the soft flakiness of a perfectly cooked, juicy filet.
What’s more, cooking salmon with the skin on locks its nutrients and oils inside the fish itself. Otherwise, those mighty ingredients may get lost in the cooking process. The skin also protects the fish from drying out during preparation, which is good to know if you plan on grilling, searing, or pan-frying your Kvaroy Arctic salmon.
Another way to enjoy the healthy benefits of salmon skin is to turn it into crispy chips!
Salmon Skin Chips
Salmon chips are a great kid-friendly introduction to the incredibly rich culinary world of salmon skin!
Step 1: Preparation
Cut the skin into small strips (2 x 3 inches). Don’t worry if the strips seem a bit too long — they will shrink when cooking.
Step 2: Seasoning
The variety of flavor combinations for salmon skin chips is incredible. Just get creative, follow your cravings, or listen to your family’s all-time favorite flavors! You can choose among sea salt and pepper, lemon and lime, chili flakes, butter and thyme, paprika and teriyaki mix, sesame and garlic, and many more combinations. Once you have covered the salmon skin with your seasoning of choice, leave it to settle for a few minutes. That way it will have a stronger flavor.
Step 3: Do you want your salmon skin chips to be extra crispy?
If you love that extra crispiness and its satisfying crunch, pat the skin strips dry before starting to cook them. That way you will remove any excess moisture, which will help give it that crunchy texture.
Step 4: Cooking time!
Lightly massage both sides of the skin with a bit of olive oil or avocado oil. Place the skin shiny-side up on a tray with parchment paper. If you’d like, you can sprinkle some extra seasoning on top. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees F. That’s it, you’re done!
Step 5: Serving
Salmon skin chips can be served in various ways! You can eat them plain, with a healthy veggie dip, as a salad topper, or even as a garnish! It’s up to you and what your family likes!
