How to Raise Adventurous Readers
As parents, our mission is to raise adventurous eaters… and readers! March is National Reading Month, and there are plenty of fun ways to celebrate and to start new reading habits and traditions in your house!
Just like food and exploring different cuisines, reading is an adventure through space and time, through various worlds and lives, and it’s not only a great way to learn new things, but it’s also an enjoyable way to spend your time.
Here are some exciting ways to invite your child to celebrate National Reading Month with you!
Pick Fun Topics: Focus on the subjects that interest your child. What do they find fascinating: whales, the ocean, dinosaurs, space, anything! Knowing that, find books, stories, and articles related to the topic, and have fun with topic-related activities!
Reading Challenge: Pick a realistic challenge to read a certain number of books monthly. Set a goal for and make a chart to track progress. You could even get class mates, friends, and family involved and turn it into a friendly competition!
Create a Reading Nook: Find a cozy spot in your home and create a reading nook. It could be a corner of your bedroom, a quiet spot in the living room, or even a blanket fort! Fill it with pillows, blankets, and of course, books.
Book Club: Start a book club with your friends or family. Pick a book to read together, and then discuss it when you’re finished. You could even have a themed book club, like a Harry Potter or ocean-inspired book club, where you dress up and have themed snacks!
Library Visit: Visit your local library and explore all the amazing books they have to offer. Many libraries also have fun events and activities not only during National Reading Month but throughout the year, so be sure to check their website or ask a librarian.
Reading Games: Make reading even more fun by turning it into a game. You could play “book bingo,” where you have a bingo card with different types of books or genres, and mark off each one as you read it. You could also play “book charades,” where you act out scenes from your favorite books.
Reading Log: Keep track of all the books you read during National Reading Month by creating a reading log. Write down the title of the book, the author, the main characters names, and a short summary of the plot.
