More About Kvaroy Arctic's New Sustainable Packaging

In line with our values of respect for nature, marine environments and sustainable aquaculture, we are happy to share that Kvarøy Arctic switched from expanded polystyrene packaging to sustainable fiber-based packaging solutions in partnership with DS Smith, a British multinational sustainable packaging company.

According to the European Commission, single-use plastic food containers and related waste account for 70% of marine litter and can take up to 400 years to degrade. That’s why we went on a mission to find a better solution for our products. Through our new partnership with DS Smith, we are committed to developing and implementing a sustainable corrugated cardboard packaging solution for the transportation of Kvarøy Arctic’s products to combat the industry standard.

What’s more, our new packaging vastly reduces logistics costs. 410 empty corrugated boxes can be transported per pallet, compared to 36 expanded polystyrene boxes. And thanks to their ease of opening, each box can easily be disposed of in regular recycling bins.

Our customers, including Whole Foods Market, are already using this new packaging, and by the end of 2022, about 75% of Kvarøy Arctic’s packaging will be made of this new material.

This switch to sustainable packaging supports our overall mission of tackling

sustainable ways to farm both in and out of the water. This innovation comes in addition to our other sustainable initiatives like partnering to develop special sustainable fish feed, utilizing fermented microalgae as a source of omega-3s fatty acid, and many more.
